It's Fall Ball!

The prompt was "New Friend".

I have a terrible urge to list and explain everything I'm not happy with, about the art. But I probably shouldn't do that. It's fine to just post and move on.

This is kind of niche, because this isn't an event in normal play. It's that first time being dragged out of bounds to skip a certain annoying door. A secret technique passed down from experienced players to new moths.

I love the affectionate player culture around glitches. And I love exploring the secrets of the out of bounds areas, now that I know how.

Checking up on how the Flowers are growing...

My plan was to pick something interesting from the Fall each week, try to draw it that weekend, and keep bouncing around different teams. But. 🫠 Yeah. My drawing from Fall 3 had problems and I was busy after Fall 4, etc etc. It feels like I need to get something drawn fast or it's just not going to happen. Even with the glacial pace of Fall Ball.

So, we're back with the Flowers because I love Blasebears, and I delight in Dervin Gorczyca (previously a Jazz Hand). Gorczyca is also a name for the white mustard plant, which has delicate yellow flowers. And I think that's kind of neat.

I went to the Sky x Aurora concert with my friends. ✨ It was so much bigger than I expected.

Busy days lately... but here. A doodle. 💤

Feels weird to post this but. This was the year I started drawing again, after a 5 year break.

In late January, I tried to draw a friend's character after we played through a game event together. The sketch looks fine and cute to me now but it felt awful at the time. My hands didn't work right at all.
I showed my buddy anyway and 2022 was the year I learned the incredible uplifting power of a niche interest and a supportive friend.

I tried to write more about why it had been so long since I drew but I got really into my feelings about stuff that I'm not sure I wanted to post.... And I swear I tried to fit more non-Sky things into the grid but it's been my comfortable sandbox to just try stuff, while I've been getting my hands back.

Cohost has been very cool. I'm still getting used to how it feels to post things where strangers can see them and for now I really don't want to see numbers. Knowing that I'm being perceived™ by a handful of chosters is probably affecting me in small ways, but so far it's been fine. So, thank you to the kind people who have interacted with me on here. I hope next year is full of nice things for all of us.

The goal for 2023 is, I guess, to keep chasing the weird energy I'm feeling and trying new things. Trying old things. Maybe checking if my old art supplies are still okay...... Anyway. Thanks for reading. Happy New Year! ✨✨

NEW Open The Forbidden Book (It Is Forbidden)

Finally played Celeste 🏔️✨

It's a new goal for me to draw something for every game I play, but... I still don't know how to write about games. ...It was good! ...I'm very bad at platforming! I got there eventually! And the story and gameplay always supported each other (and me), interwoven together. I'll be thinking about that for a long time.

I do wish I had been sketching stuff all the way through the game though, instead of waiting. It's too hard to hold on to delicate art ideas when you're falling into the exact same spikes AGAIN. 🤬

been sick and stressed lately. art has been tough.
but i'm feeling a little better today.

Rain came to this part of the wasteland last week. 🌧️

more silly game stuff. there was a few days of rain on this map, and then gradually spreading grasses. lots of flowers and butterflies now.

it's a very short event, we'll be back to the usual sand dunes soon. but while it's here... I wanted to sit with it for a while 🪑🎨

I wasn't able to think of anything for this, for a while. But a conversation with a game friend reminded me that I used to be VERY freaked out by my now beloved wiggly darkness creatures from Sky. I had a 180° change of opinion about them and then forgot about it.... head truly empty.

The art here took a quiet and contemplative turn, but my early days in Sky were more like, uhh...

It was a little stressful, with the dragons, back then.

I've been replaying Vantage Master 2 very slowly, in a 'its open in the background and I do a couple turns now and then' kind of way.

Here's some doodles of a few Natials (summoned units) and my character for this file, uh, Chewchew.

Who seems kinda.... familiar.... for some reason. 🤔

It's well worth doodling on this just to see the other drawings in detail. 😌 Thank you to @ChrisStapley for running this event for a little longer.

Art Summary 2023 🎉

Most of my finished work was fanart of Sky: Children of the Light.
I don't know what to say, it's just very low-stress, and that's nice sometimes.

But I also particularly enjoyed making fanart for stuff like Citizen Sleeper(5, 8) and VALLONO(7) that have really inspiring (and intimidating, tbh) strong visual styles to begin with.

I had a lot of feelings about the characters in both of those stories and I think working on these pieces gave me a clearer sense of what I enjoy about fanart -- I like having time to sit with my thoughts about a story. Pull it apart, mix it with other things in my head, put it back together into a new drawing. It's satisfying.

All of the color work all year was done with Medibang Paint on my phone. All of the undersketches and the monochrome stuff from this year were done on my e-ink tablet, a Supernote A6X.

Thoughts for 2024:

• I desperately need to get weirder and more self-indulgent with everything, all the time.
• I always have so many WIPs that are basically fine and nearly done but I get too in my head about one thing or another. I need to let myself post rougher things more often to try to release that pressure.
• It's time to do more physical art (linocut and maybe trying stuff with clay), and more art studies. ✨
• I want to try to do requests at some point this year (with some kind of small restrictions) because I think it would be really fun to draw for people finally.
