This is an archive of art posts I made on cohost.org during 2024.
It was a good time. Thank you everyone.
Thank you to @fizzelpons, who let me play with their OCs a while ago.
I wanted to put them all in the same scene together but it was too hard to draw (I've got some stuff to work on this year!), so each of them got a little portrait instead because they're all so cute.
❤️
Yesterday's hourly comic panels.
I've been a bit sick. (I'll be fine soon.)
Sorry about my handwriting.
Been a minute since I posted. Hiya :]
Some Sky sketches, some spirits that visited recently -- and some children of the light in seasonal clothing.
I ... don't know yet what I think about the app I drew these in. It's the Supernote tablet's new art app 'Atelier'. I find it very calming to draw in. I do like how the pencil brush feels.
These were mostly done with the 6B pencil brush in black -- which is also my favorite pencil hardness for sketching on paper lol -- and it does look quite a lot like my real-paper-and-pencil drawings in the end. I'm not sure if that's a good thing though?? Please disregard the light gray spray brush, that didn't work out. I just needed a frame... it's... it's fine.
But even though it feels very natural for sketching, I don't feel like taking stuff I've drawn in this app into color or... refining them at all past this point. Stuff is messy. I kind of like it messy? I wish atelier's file format had 'pages' in sketchbooks like the normal notebook format does because having a huge folder of individual files for every vague exploratory sketch is kinda... 💀
But it's fine. It's got some good tools, and I'll keep trying to figure out how I want to use it.
Anyway, hi again. I've been real life-ing and I missed cohost.
Caught up on some random manga reading recently. I read part of the manga adaption of Kemono no Souja/The Beast Player. And while writing this I found out there was also an anime (though the art style looks quite different) and the novels were translated into english a few years ago, so I might have to check those out to find out how it ends.
Sketchy fanart~ some characters from Yamashita Kazumi's Land.
🌻🌻🌻
Okay, I'm going on a tangent.
Manben is a TV show where Urasawa Naoki (of Monster, 20th Century Boys, PLUTO, Billy Bat, etc) goes around and talks in-depth with other professional manga artists about their process and thoughts about making manga. It's very good.
Yamashita Kazumi was only was featured for half an episode, while she worked on a single page of an early chapter of Land. And it's probably my favorite episode.
I had never heard of her before watching her rethinking, re-drawing, physically trying the pose to try to understand it internally, giving up on beautifully drawn panels because they didn't feel right for the story... changing her mind and doing something completely different if it would better capture the feeling.... but by the end I related so much, and I wanted to see the page in context.
Anyway, that's how I first read Land. A mysterious story about a small area of land (heh) surrounded by mountains. At each cardinal direction stands one of the four gods, and beyond the mountains is the next world. At age 50, you die and are taken there as an ascended elder. If there are twins, one must be sacrificed. Oh, and don't go outside at night.
That's just stuff from the first chapter, I don't want to spoil more than that.
But every time I re-read it (the fan translation, no official english yet) I'm impressed all over again when I get to the page featured in the TV show and I remember her hard work. I want to keep trying harder to capture the right mood too.
I'm just in a sketchy mood lately, I guess.
Anyway, more drawing while mulling over something I've been reading.
More drawing while thinking about stuff.
My usual tiny mmo (Sky) has has come to Steam. Lots of new players coming in to check it out (and some to bounce off of it because there's no combat system, haha... )
When I was newer, it was easier to 'adopt a newbie', I guess? But as an old sky kid... I absolutely don't want to infringe on a new player's exploration.
(But I also really do want to help!!! AUGH)

A rough little exploratory thing. I haven't painted in a long time. But anyway.
I've been playing a bit of @turnfollow's sci-fi farming game Before the Green Moon...
I love it when a big storm rolls in.
It makes it hard to work on the farming side of things, but it often gives me a moment to be quiet with the world of the game. This time I ran for shelter in the old greenhouse, where another character was visiting.
Maybe there was something else I could have done with my time, but there was nothing else I wanted to do except wait out the storm together.
I don't know. I just like this kind of stuff. Give me a world with rhythm and texture and I'll find myself some unscripted joys in it.
I'm not very far into the game, and I can't really speak to how the game's themes and inspirations will build together in the long run, but so far I am really enjoying my time here, in this place, with these characters, figuring it out as I go along.
Some unfinished sketches of @malusdraco's Theophania from their zine. 💜
I didn't really get these to where I wanted them to be... but as Artists Alley post-mortems are going around, I should probably post this as a direct-consequence-of-a-cool-artists-alley listing. I started these week 1 of the alley and then hurt my hand and forgot. But I love Tiff and you should check out the cool free zine tbh, the art and vibes are so good.
I wanted to draw @dill-pickle-fremen's Hrall and Savam...
Inspired by this post
Here are four random thumbnails of mine, the idea is that you finish them! Interpret them however you want, draw your own ocs, or just render whatever shapes you’re seeing! There’s no wrong answer, I just want you to draw a picture!
You might recognize which of my drawings these go to or you might not, that doesn’t really matter. (Though I might recommend you don’t try to figure that out before drawing your own, so it can be a fresh interpretation! You can ask to see my drawings after though for fun!)
And I guess add your picture to this post when it’s done, so I can see it!
A pixel art children's book style reinterpretation(??) of #4
This was really fun, thank you!

I wanted to simplify this page's name, and try to use the keysmash-y name as a sidepage to maybe post worse, sometimes?
Not sure what's going to happen over there yet but... y'know.
I don't think I did Sid justice here, but I had fun drawing them anyway!
Artfight revenge of @WitchyWhosit's Maeve 🦉
I'm not sure if freehanding a big bookshelf was a good idea.... but it was kind of fun. And for this event... I'm trying to do whatever seems fun.
Artfight revenge on our very own @KBdraws92.
First time animating anything in CSP1.
Artfight for @sunnyLawn 🐰
I know that it's the nature of the event... but I'm enjoying getting to try different things with art while drawing other people's characters.
Artfight for @fragilescales. :]
Artfight for @fizzelpons 🔧🎨🎩🐇
Cohost bonus: The definitely cuter sketch where Hop was way too big.
I bit off a bit more than I can chew with this one... I don't draw multi-character scenes that often... there's too many things to think about.
But I'm so happy to have finally been able to draw these three in a room together.... but I think I'm going to have to try again sometime (when there isn't time pressure from an event).
Artfight of @harmonymarigold's Diana. 🤖
My first thought was "Oh I want to draw a pose with the nailgun" and then I realized that nailguns are hard to draw. 😎👉👉
Theobald is a good egg.
And this was a tiny last minute artfight for @ritabuuk.
small wonders.
a slightly unpolished artfight for @soll, of their sweet little angel.
A last minute artfight attack for @artnerd1123. A little rough but Chell was sitting in my bookmarks waiting to be drawn, and so, why not.... a little thing on the last day....
One more artfight for @malusdraco 🌩️
started as painting practice and ended up here
I don't have that many drafted posts worth publishing... but what I do have are weird bits of uploaded art that only showed up in the comments.
With some apologies to the people involved... I've been thinking about it, and this is the stuff I wish I had done more of here.
More art goofs.
A ratmas celebration drawn in wigglypaint.
@Brisket and eggbug hard at work making game jam
@sofsh's character Geed and my little goof Phinxel trying to rescue @weeks
(and then @internet-janitor "Yes, and"-ed me in the comments and it was great)
My Phinxel and @zelkova's Aster eating bread
@internet-janitor's Lily receiving some shocking news about Phinxel.
I wanted there to be more of these!
I wish I did more goofs!! AHH!
My general art I could have drawn anywhere. Even completely alone. But I drew these because I was HERE.
Niche joke eggbugs that never had their time......
@ChrisStapley said it's okay to update doodles so now Phinxel has his friends.
A close up:
I think this is my last big thing to share.
I can't really explain what these pictures are about. It's too long and boring. It's kind of a dramatic re-imagining of something goofy that happened in a board game a few years ago.... ... .... yeah.
Don't worry about it.
These have been sitting around the WIP folder for a long time. As long as I've had this icon probably -- it all came out of the same batch of sketches.
Sometimes, when I've worked on this, I've wondered about how to caption the post later. Do I try to give context? ...do I just throw it out there with an emoji?
And now suddenly there's not much time left for thoughts like "when I post this on cohost".
This should have been my 'big sad essay' post, but my words always fall apart when I'm upset so I guess I can't do one of those.
I have grown and changed a lot because I was here.
Because of the other people who were here too.
Because it sometimes felt more possible here to bridge the gap and start getting to know people that I never would have met otherwise.
And then there's so many people that I've really appreciated seeing around, but we're still only acquaintances.
I'm a bit sad to lose how easy it is to drop in on each other's comments now and then.
Just as I'm worried that I've missed someone important and I'll lose them in the feedback...
I accept that some of us will only see each other in our RSS feeds going forward. And it's okay. It'll be okay. It was still nice to have met.
On the art side of things... I've drawn so much stuff that had no built-in audience. Even on here, website of niche interests. But... even without fully knowing what the deal is, people have usually been willing to meet me where I was anyway.
Friends, fellow artists, complete strangers, willing to take a look at something they didn't already know they were interested in and finding something nice to say about it.
I'm not sure how much of that was in response to me always hanging out in the comments of other people's art posts, being excited about their work. Or crochet project. Or cat. Comments beget comments? Slowly, the ice breaks.
Whatever it was, I'm really grateful.
Thank you for looking after me, folks.
Some little guys for @gluedex
EGGBUGKA........
(inspired by @ROU....)
sometimes it should be the dragon who's a ditzy dipshit and the kobolds who've got everything well organised
"...he he he..."
"SHHHHH!!"
Alright. The last post from me.
Wherever you end up... comment on stuff. Make time to goof around.
Try new things even if you think you won't be good at them.
And here's where you can (probably) find me in the future.
